Fifteen beautiful brides took to the stage in all their beauty, vying for the top prize of being named the ‘Bride of the Year’. As the winning brides took their place at the end of the stage, streamers and confetti were let off celebrating another successful show. In the end there could only be one winner, an honour that was bestowed on Susan MacLauchlan. Beautiful brides thrill audience

Continued from page 1 Susan’s decent down the catwalk began like a dream. A solo bagpipe player performed her wedding song as she glided along in front of a 180 strong audience. When her name was announced as the winning bride, her surprised expression said it all. “I really didn’t believe I had won. I heard my name and it took me a few seconds to realise it was me they were calling out,” Susan laughs. “I really had the best night with these fabulous girls but in all honesty I think

we all won. We all got the ultimate prize - our wonderful husbands,” she says. Susan was born and raised in Blenheim and now lives in Christchurch with her husband where she works as a pilot for Mt Cook Airline. “He is the best in the world, I am so lucky to have the best husband ever,” she says. Winning second place was Shannon Diu, and in third was Emily Wilson. Mrs Personality was awarded to Sorayah Lindstrom and Mrs Photogenic judged by the Sun Newspaper

PJ continues the fight to get home By Jacob Page Former Marlborough Boys’ College head boy PJ Lupi could be home in New Zealand by the end of the month if his recovery continues to progress well. The 28-year-old, who was left in a coma after a scooter accident while holidaying in Phuket on July 6, is now conscious and responding to the voices of his father, brother and friend who remain at

MP to visit on plastic bag issue Green Par ty MP Denise Roche will be in Picton on Sunday to give a presentation on reducing the use of single-use plastic bags. She will speak at a Community Conservation Hour at the Picton Little Theatre on Sunday at 4pm. She will be one of Denise Roche three presentations along with Plastic Bag Free Picton and Conservation Kids New Zealand. Denise is on a nationwide tour to talk about the issue. The Picton campaign was started by Linda Thompson 12 months ago. She has been making cloth shopping bags from donated materials and giving demonstrations at Mariner’s Mall in an effort to get the seaside town and its residents out of the habit of using plastic bags.

Region proves a pricey stay Marlborough proves to be a pricey destination to visit, ranking as the second most expensive place to stay according to website Trivago. Figures from trivago show Otago was the most expensive place in New Zealand to find accommodation in 2015, followed by Marlborough and Northland. The average price of a room in Otago was $234 per night, compared to $121 in the least expensive region of Manawatu-Wanganui. The average per night cost in Marlborough was $218. The prices were based on standard double room rates for trivago-listed accommodation providers, including motels, hotels, serviced apartments and holiday parks.

Bence and tequila team up! A Blenheim bartender will be competing in the finals of a national competition to find the next ‘Don of Tequila’. Bence Harangozó is one of six Kiwi finalists who will be battling it out on a 1949 Dunedin-built steam train for the chance to visit Mexico. Once the national finals are complete, the best-of-the best from each country will be taken to the Jose Cuervo distillery, La Rojeña, in the town of Tequila for a final global showdown where they will be put to the test to prove they’re the ‘ultimate don’. Bence made it to the final with his tequila serve ‘El Oro del Cobre’ (Gold of the Copper). The final taking place tomorrow will see Glenbrook Vintage Railway in South Auckland transformed into a small corner of Mexico giving the winner a taste

of what’s to come. It will include a tequila tasting and appreciation master class, the creation of the classic margarita and their own tequila serve – all whilst trying to deal with the vibrations and movement of a 66-year-old steam train. The global competition has drawn entries from thousands of bartenders around the world. The winner will travel to Mexico where they will get to harvest and bottle their own crop of agave on the Jose Cuervo Tequila estate. “Becoming a Don of Tequila is the ultimate accolade that is only awarded to those who truly deserve it, brand manager of Jose Cuervo, Hannah Webb says. “To get this far the finalists have already had to prove so much, just one final push and they could be on their way to Mexico. We wish them every success and the best of luck.”

Blenheim Playcentre grants officer Justine Johnson says they would not have been able to afford these kinds of things so it’s icing on the top. “We get enough money to operate from the Government; of course, but to get all this is just so great.” Justine says the playcentre encourages kids to be “messy and creative at the same time” and the added supplies of paint, chalk and glitter will make that easier, especially during winter. “We’ve had a year of not buying any extras so we are so incredibly thankful to the Blue Door Trust.

A Blind Eye We live in a throw-away age with ready access to mass-produced, easily affordable goods. The upside is that everyone can participate. The downside is that this trend greatly diminishes the market for superior quality goods and the end result is that we lose the beautiful, individual workmanship and quality which does not occur in the cheap, mass-produced market. Today, instead of working with a product or skill to improve and perfect, there is an escalating tendency for everyone to try and be all things to all people, with the result of an over-supply of mediocre goods and a dumbing down of our expectations for something of value, creativity and uniqueness. I recently executed the estate of an elderly and very dear aunt. The nieces and nephews were encouraged to choose something to remember her by. It was the unique, individual items which people chose. Nothing wildly expensive (some from an earlier generation even) which caught our imagination, however each item had stood the test of time by virtue of its individuality, quality and workmanship - wearable or usable today, and none were the mass-produced items of today. Memories and family traditions are first and foremost about the intangible things, but it is rather wonderful to see or wear something that reminds us of those closest to us, and we turn a blind eye to the future when we only buy the lowest common denominator in jewellery and other goods. If you are choosing jewellery think about who might enjoy it in the future, either by way of a passing on of a treasured piece or, as with my family, a reminder of someone we loved and respected. Dear Ed, Mr Nae Nae missed the basic point about the Treaty. It was meant to bring two cultures together into one. But it has not happened because of the tsunami of lily white PC thinking. A couple of examples: We have a Maori rugby team. That is great. What if we had a non-Maori NZ Pakeha rugby team? What howls of protest it would cause. Pakeha player of the year, Pakeha loans etc etc. In fisheries, recreational fisho’s have had all sorts of unfair rules put on them, but did you know customary do not have any fishing rules? Ancestors Dear Ed, A letter written on the June 26 by Mr Parker was speaking of ‘equality not racism’ as he feels we are all Kiwis and should all be treated the same. This was based on the story of police having two levels of enforcement laws around driving licenses for the population in Auckland. Kiwi Ken in support of Mr Parker’s position wrote on June 8, “Our national newsreaders should have the option, even a good old Kiwi ‘gidday’ being ok. It does not matter who our ancestors were.” L NaeNae again replies: “Another one! Kiwi Ken does not get the culture/ethnic thing. As he shows a lack of respect and understanding of his own culture, it’s no wonder he cannot respect anyone else’s.

The last statement indicates that Ken should become better informed, and that goes for anyone else who has an opinion based on injudicious information. ” I don’t know the ethnicity of any of the writer’s, but the likelihood is that they will all have varied ancestors from all over the globe. Some of the comments made by Mr Parker and Kiwi Ken demonstrate they believe in New Zealand and a culture of fairness, not focusing on the differences, but the positive things we all value to make a better future for New Zealand. Pivotal decisions ahead Tyrone Elkington-MacDonald took a chance, leaving the Canterbury rugby setup for more game time in Hawke’s Bay. After battling a knee injury, the former Marlborough Boys’ College first XV captain has marshalled the Magpies from the No 10 jersey in two successful Ranfurly Shield defences. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about chasing an opportunity, being a leader as a rookie and the joys of being semi-professional. Tyrone Elkington MacDonald has the sporting patience of a saint. After making the move to Hawke’s Bay for more top level rugby opportunities after struggling to break-out of the Canterbury B setup, the 24-year-old is finally starting to show what he is capable of. After following six of his Canterbury mates and his former Canterbury B coach Craig Philpott to Hawke’s Bay, Tyrone spent the first year of a two-year deal out with a serious knee injury. He then suffered another injury in week one of club rugby this year which put him out for 10 weeks and then had to sit out another four weeks when he aggravated the injury in the first half of his return match. “Not being in the match day 23 last season was a bit of a double-edged sword because I was still able to be around the guys throughout the competition and I learnt about their structure.” In his first-class debut in a shield challenge against Wairarapa Bush, Tyrone scored 21 points which included a try and five conversions and two penalties in 60 minutes of work in a 58-7 victory. He followed that up on Thursday with a 20-point haul consisting of four penalties and four conversions in a 50-16 win over Horowhenua-Kapiti

“That’s the thing, I’m still considered a rookie but the coaching staff are encouraging me to take control and lead the team in certain areas and they want me to earn my teammates’ respect.” Tyrone will likely be competing for game time with Blues pivot Ihaia West, while veteran Andrew Horrell is another who can slot into the playmaker role. Tyrone followed a few teammates to the Bay in an effort for more game time. “There were a few of us in the Canterbury setup who wanted more game time. “I spoke to Craig about it and he was pretty honest, he didn’t offer me a contract or anything he just said come up and play club rugby and see what happens.” Tyrone finished a marketing degree at Canterbury University in 2013 so his move north was purely a rugby decision. “This is my chance to make it in a way.” Tyrone says being a semi-professional rugby player is tough at times but also rewarding. He has been training for the ITM Cup season since November and has had to maintain a job running sports clinics in schools while committing to long training sessions. He is the cousin of Mako hookers Jesse and Quentin MacDonald, while his sister Jayda

Elkington has played for New Zealand in age-group volleyball. Tyrone played three seasons in the Marlborough Boys’ first XV from 2007 to 2009. Two of those seasons were under current Tasman head-coach and Chiefs bound assistant Kieran Keane.

“I get back to Blenheim once or twice a year to see Mum and catch up with the family.” For now, his focus is his rugby. “I want to push for as much game time as possible and take every opportunity I’m given – you never know what might happen from some good performances.”

People take up Yoga for many different reasons and it has nothing to do with being flexible or fit, but this can be one of the many benefits people experience from their practice,” Loka Yoga owner and teacher Sharon Thatcher says. Located at the Blenheim end of New Renwick Road, Loka Yoga is run from a modern, purpose built studio in a quiet and peaceful setting. “Class numbers are limited so each participant gets the individual attention they deserve during class,” Sharon says. “For me it’s about giving people close care and attention in an environment that is non judgmental and non competitive.” There are different styles of Yoga available at Loka Yoga, suitable for both the absolute beginner and more experienced practitioners. Volleyball begins By Jacob Page The rust has been removed from most teams after the opening round of the Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League at Stadium 2000. After a six week break a few teams had a slow start to their games, this was especially true in the game of Cri Clovers versing USO Fiafia, with the first set going to USO 25-16. The second set was much better and Phil Gleeson of Cri Clovers played a well thought-out game. USO’s Afa Lauvai was spiking well for his team and gained some valuable points giving his team the second set win 25-23. Gleeson really came alive towards the end of the third set but was too late for salvaging the set and again it went to USO 25-21. Bella’s Team found firm in the third set of their game against Pure Samoa. PK Heng played well for Bella’s Team especially after not playing for a few years but Pure Samoa edged them out in sets 1 and 2, both 25-23.

Pure Samoa put in a team effort to then sneak home again at 2523 for three hard earned points for the table. The other Premier Grade game was played between Treefellas and a Woodbourne team. With some new players in the Woodbourne team Treefellas capitalised and took the first set 25-23. Treefellas then relaxed and Woodbourne evened the game up taking the second set 25-14. Treefellas showed their experience in the third set and with some fantastic serving from Shane Downes won the third set 25-17 and the game. Musseleers are again back in the competition and they had a tough start playing last defending champions, The Avengers, who won comfortably 25-14, 25-12 and 25-14. Safe Crackers also had a three set win when they played new team R.I.P. Josh Marshall of R.I.P. was the standout in his debut, scrambling to keep alive rallies rather well.

Obituary

Barry Matthew Mason One of the most prominent and respected Maori leaders in Marlborough, Barry Mason died on Friday, aged 82 Barry was born in Christchurch, and raised at Deep Creek Canvastown until the age of 12. With his Mum and Dad, they then shifted to Wellington, where he attended high school and then Victoria University. He met Kathleen Cody in Wellington when they both worked at D.I.C, and after they were married in 1964, they shifted to Kawerau to start a family. Barry worked there as a cost accountant for Tasman Pulp and Paper. After Kawerau, the family shifted to Tokoroa at the Kinleith timber mill where he was also a cost accountant. They then went to Balclutha where he was the Financial Controller for the Clutha Licensing Trust. Barry was an avid contributor to the community; he was on the Tokoroa YMCA Trustee, Rosebank Primary School PTA, and Bay of Plenty Badminton Association Treasurer. In 1981 the family moved back to Blenheim, and Barry spent the last 34 years working with advancing the development of local iwi, following in the footsteps of his mother Aunty Kate Mason Moses QSM. He was Chair of Ngati Rarua Iwi Trust for over a decade and was a signatory to their Waitangi Tribunal Claim. He gave evidence at these hearings relaying his childhood, noting some very fond memories of his mother Aunty Katie Mason Moses and his stepfather Bill Moses. He was a prime mover and leader with the Ngati Rarua Iwi Council and the Whakarewa Trust Board and was instrumental in negotiating the return of Whakarewa lands in Motueka. This eventuated in the establishment of Ngati Rarua Atiawa Iwi

Trust where he was a Trustee. For several years Barry sat on Wakatu Incorporation and was well known for his strong financial and commercial nous. He was also Chair of Te Hauora o Ngati Rarua Ltd, one of two Maori health providers currently operating in Nelson Marlborough, and the Treasurer for Parerarua Centre. He was also a Trustee on a number of organisations, including Ngati Apa Ki Te Ra To, and Ngati Kuia Te Hora Trust. He held positions on Wairau Pa Kokiri Committee, Maori Advisory Committee to the Marlborough Campus NMIT, Te Runanganui Ki Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Maui, Marlborough Committee Law Centre, Ko Te Poumanawa Oranga Ki Te Tau Ihu, Te Awhina Marae Land Trustee, Te Wai Ora Trust Board, Marlborough District Council Assets Committee, Community Organisations Grants Scheme, Te Awhina Marae Health Services, Wairau Reserved Lands, and Manchester Lodge. Barry was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Barry has gone to be with his wife Kathleen, his eldest son Bernard and his mother Katie Mason Moses. He is survived by his four sons David, Peter, Martin and Gordon, and his nine grandchildren.

Derry and Hefford cautious in Canada By Jacob Page Marlborough’s John Derry and Brent Hefford are fifth after three days of the 2015 World Jet Boat Championships in Canada. The duo had a rough start to the week-long event with a broken turbine on the eve of the first day meaning a lot of work had to go into the boat prior to getting on the water. The 2013 world champion and multiple time New Zealand champion says the Canadian rivers have taken some adjusting too but he said speed was increasing. “The rivers are a lot wider than we are used to in New Zealand where they are narrower and have sharper corners. “Truth be told, we are down a bit on speed from the top competitors but we had a strong second day so hopefully we can build on that.” While the rivers are wide, Derry says there are dangers lurking below. “There are plenty of rocks that
